The waste to energy plants burn municipal solid waste (MSW), often called trash or garbage to produce steam in a boiler to generate electricity. Waste to energy plants cause less air pollution than coal plants. At the same time, it is carbon negative processing waste into fuel releases considerably less carbon and methane into the air than having waste decay awy in landfillls or in the lake.

The waste to energy plants are developping quickly in China thanks to the double CO2 reducing effect. Tangshan city, one of the major electricity providers in China has started to apply widely this technology.

Before applying this method, the city used coal plants for power generation and hot water for the heater in winter, which meant severe air and water pollution for local people and impact nefastly their health
